Rules as reusable report queries Hot

by Tom Clement on February 26, 2015

Instead of writing report queries over and over each time you write a similar report, why not encapsulate them as business rules?

  • As a report creator, I would like to be able to:

    • Reuse existing queries or query fragments
    • Use previously defined business rules as part of my report queries

For example, the "Priority 2 Evaluation" business rule from the SSM Change Management process app could be part of a query:
Where Submit date > 1 day ago and Priority 2 Evaluation = true

Regarding the comment by David Easter, has this been implemented? (I don't suppose there has been another major release.)

Report Filters is a helpful addition to SBM 11, but there is one very important capability missing: Advanced SQL Query. This omission is particularly apparent when creating feeds. I have a number of filters that require A-SQL, and while that works for reports, but backlog and Kanban feeds do include this. And on a similar note, I have experimented with Advanced Query Views, but those too cannot be included in a feed's Search Filter. It would be great if all 'data query filters' worked the same way and were interchangeable.

This feature is available in SBM 11.0 as part of a larger story that supports the definition of reusable report filters. So while the mechanism supports the use of rules for this purpose, it lets you define and reuse filters at runtime as well.

As a cumbersome but effective workaround, I have written a SQL script that copies TS_REPORTS.TS_SPECIFICATIONS1 from one report to another. Then, I manually edit the destination report to make any needed changes. -caveat emptor
