Web Administrator: get rid of flash Hot

by David Berner on February 15, 2016

Adobe Flash is losing support faster than anticipated by most. The web administrator is one of the last Flash widgets in SBM and it needs to go. Rather sooner than later if it was me. :)

  • I know I will come eventually, but I have not seen anyone voicing a request for this yet. So let me state the obvious (?!). The web administrator needs go HTML5. All major browsers are starting to get rid of flash support. When looking at the inherent inertia of moving to a new major version, in our view this move should happen sooner than later. Even if most users will never get to see or use the web administration interface, administrators _live_ in that interface. There are many reasons why it seems obvious why the move to a html interface needs to be made (speed, stability, security, ergonomy), the main concern will soon be support. In our organization talk is already underway to diable the flash player companywide. This would have us have to resort to special workstations of VMs with a legacy browser just for the administration os SBM. While we are not quite there yet, I think it is a good time to start thinking about moving this interface to HTML5 as well.

Unfortunately, this is taking longer than expected. The good news is that the interface is not only being converted away from Flash, we're also introducing more modern navigation and presentation paradigms to make it even better. The bad news is that we're going to have to defer this out of the 2HCY'17 release and move it to the 1HCY'18 release to ensure that it is complete and meets our quality standards.

This has been deferred for consideration in the 2HCY'17 release.

Converting away from Flash to HTLM5 is under consideration for the 1HCY'17 release.
